Katy,

Actually, it doesn't cost anything to take extra courses even if you are enrolled. There is a single fee for a Master's degree, and each course on top is not more money. I know, I am taking 5 right now.

I know there is a novel book club, but what I have in mind would be more like a close reading and discussion group.

As I have 2 comments on this post now, and many comments in real life, I think this is a common conception about the course.

I am feeling the same way about my classes. I really just want some sort of deeper discussion! It is such a change from the debates I had in my history undergrad classes. My relief is that I am auditing a class in Czech drama. Its free to audit and you don't have to do any of the essays, but I still go to class and discuss. It is such a nice change from some of the FIS classes.
We need some sort of bookclub.

Hey Steven,
Thanks for the compliment about my blog name!
I just wanted to say that I completely agree with you about #4. It doesn't really seem to matter what the prof thinks because in the end, the TA will be the one grading the assignment. Heard of the recency/primacy effects? Those can really effect what grades we get depending on what order the papers get marked in!

I did my undergrad in Business Management, so some of this stuff is familiar, but that doesn't make things any simpler for me.
